The beginning: eos 5d mkiii + 90mm ts-e – 1/3200 f3,2 iso 100 full tilt
This is the first episode of a series of non-conventional lens reviews.
My project is to introduce some special lenses throught their outdoor use, their pros and cons.
This will not to be a super technical reviews but it will be a story of the lens during an adventurous day.

I will put only a lens in my backpack: i will use only fixed lens because I want to think about how to use it to enhance its characteristics.
If you have only a piece of glass you must be a very good photographers to tell about your adventure. I will use the main characteristic of the lens and i will use all my creativity to do this.
The Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 is one of the more unusual lenses in the Canon lens lineup – it is one of three canon tilt-shift (TS) lenses.
Shift lenses allow you to compensate perspective distortions (converging verticals) by shifting the optical path off its horizontal axis. By doing so the projected image (rectangle) on the film/sensor plane gets distorted to a trapezoid negating the original effect. You may argue that you can also apply perspective correction via an imaging application these days. This may be true but you’re doing so at cost of image quality because a stretched image portions rely on interpolated data.
Unlike most other shift lenses Canon TS-E lenses also offer a tilt feature allowing to alter the focus plane. On normal lenses the focus plane is parallel to the film/sensor plane. By tilting the lens you can coincide the focus plane to the layout of your main subject in your scene which may not be parallel to the film/sensor plane (Scheimpflug effect). This way you can optimize your depth-of-field although you’re not increasing it. If you tilt and/or shift the lens it has quite a bizarre look.

I decided to use this lens during a backcountry ski tour.
Marco, Rob and I decide to leave for the top of “Monte Calvo” mountain that was very rich in snow. The snow was so deep that to trace by skis was every extreme!
We did a very nice ski tour: 800 vertical meters through beautiful beech woods. The climb was tough but the descent was a lot of fun!

About the lens:
The Canon 90mm f2,8 tsp is a very good lens, it is free from defects.
It is more sharp than canon 70-200 f2,8L. I used it for portrait of my daughters, facial details are fantastic.
The lens has also a good macro capacity and the focus ring is nicely sized and very smooth.
I will not show you archive pictures but only the images shot during this day.
This is the first rule of my project.

Una sola lente per guardarsi intorno: il Canon 90mm f2,8 ts-e
Questa è la prima puntata di una serie di recensioni su alcune lenti di “nicchia”
Il mio progetto è quello di farvi conoscere queste ottiche, ma soprattutto come si comportano sul campo, le loro possibilità creative, i pregi e i difetti.
Non sarà la solita recensione super tecnica con i soliti crop per la nitidezza, i test sulla vignettatura, l’abberrazione ecc che trovate ovunque sul web. Se cercate una recensione tecnica esistono siti famosi come the-digital-picture.com.
In queste avventure fotografiche porterò una sola lente nel mio zaino; una lente fissa, senza possibilità di zoom.
Avere una sola lente nello zaino significa dover ragionare molto di più, soprattutto sulla distanza da scegliere per inquadrare il soggetto.
Avendo un solo pezzo di vetro dobbiamo cercare di sfruttarne al pieno le caratteristiche, dando spazio alla nostra creatività.
Parliamo ora del “pezzo di vetro” scelto per questa occasione.
Il canon 90mm ts-e è un’ottica nata per foto di architettura, permette di controllare la distorsione prospettica ed evitare le linee cadenti ad esempio di edifici.
Ha infatti la possibilità di muoversi rispetto al sensore della fotocamera con 2 movimenti: decentramento e basculaggio.
Grazie al decentramento possiamo mantenere in bolla la fotocamera e far muovere il soggetto per comporre l’inquadratura ideale.
Il basculaggio invece ci consente invece di inclinare l’obiettivo rispetto al sensore della fotocamera creando strani effetti sulla profondità di campo.

Ho scelto di portare con me questa “strana” lente durante un giro di backcountry con grosse quantità di neve….
Dopo le abbondanti nevicate di questi giorni, con una condizione meteo non ottimale, Marco, Rob ed io abbiamo deciso di affrontare i boschi di Monte Calvo (AQ) e di raggiungerne la vetta.
Non è stato fare la traccia sulla neve profonda, in alcuni tratti si sfiorava il metro; per questo ringrazio Marco e Rob. Un giro bellissimo di circa 800m di dislivello mi ha permesso di scattare strane ma interessanti foto.
Il 90 ts-e è un’ottica non molto facile da usare, soprattutto se il soggetto da fotografare si muove, non ha l’auto focus!
Grazie all’effetto di basculaggio però possiamo decidere di mettere a fuoco su una linea perpendicolare alla nostra fotocamera; mantenendo il soggetto su quella linea sarà sempre a fuoco, a qualunque distanza si trovi; a destra e sinistra del soggetto l’immagine sarà progressivamente sfuocata.
Il 90mm ts-e è un’ottima lente, praticamente esente da difetti.
Ha una nitidezza impressionante, superiore a quella del 70-200 f2,8L. Ho utilizzato molto questa lente per ritratti dei miei figli: le immagini hanno un moltissimo dettaglio ed a f2,8 lo sfuocato è eccezionale!
Ha anche una buona capacità macro ed è particolarmente adatta per foto di still-life.
Non vi farò vedere immagini di archivio fatte con questa lente ma soltanto le foto fatte durante questa giornata , niente di più!
